To Drown

There is a joy in skimming waves. When home is deep and broad azure. For we have carved our welcome here. And we are kings upon the main.

This deck’s more firm than any land; the stars, like faith, they guide me on. The wind uplifts and scours clean. Our sails snap just so, just so.

(And holding fast before it all, this home contains a truth ingrained:) Continue reading

Some Thoughts: So You’re Going to be a Teacher

4 things I was told about teaching that are wrong.

In this post I want to talk about 4 things that I was told to do/not to do when on teaching practice that I just don’t agree with. There’s a kernel of truth in each one but they’re not absolute rules. To be fair, I don’t think anyone who put these forward thought they were absolute rules either. However, I think that it’s easy to misinterpret them as such, so with this article I want to present some arguments against them. I hope you will forgive me if I exaggerate some of these positions and arguments; I think it makes for a more interesting read. Continue reading

Steve and the Egg that Did Not Break

Steve’s wisdom was not always greeted openly by the people who heard it. Indeed, I am sorry to say that there were many who hated and attacked him for it. I record here one of the first of these incidents, when the Elders of our village challenged and criticized Steve’s wisdom before us all. Let us begin:

One day when Steve was deep in thought, the Elders of our village came to challenge his teaching. There were six of them in the group: five Elders and the Chief Elder, and the Chief Elder carried an egg in his hands. It was early in the morning, and many of us had not yet risen from bed, but Steve’s favorite disciple greeted them at the door and brought them before him. Continue reading

Skyrim Major Bug + Guide: Companions + The Helm of Winterhold

Ok guys, I’m just writing this short article to warn you about the first serious bug I’ve encountered in Skyrim. This bug will basically break the Companion’s questline and the town of Whiterun as well. It’s avoidable and fixable though and I’m going to tell you how. Continue reading

My Top 5 Staple Foods

Staple foods are those foods that make up the bulk of what you eat. You’re going to be eating these foods every single day and this means that you will have favorites among them – and maybe even ones that you can’t stand! My granddad, for example, won’t eat rice or noodles; he’s a potato man to the bone. In this post I’m going to rank 5 of my main staple foods and tell you why I prefer some of them to others. This list will be in reverse order, i.e. starting with my least liked at 5 and moving up to my favorite at 1.

I apologize if anyone gets hungry while reading this.

On with the list! Continue reading

My Little Fish

My little fish

Is lithe and small

He loves to swim in his bowl

He needs to grow up big and strong

I fill his tank with food and tell him that I love him

His scales are bright and his gills pump the cloudy water

I feed him and feed him and feed him some more

I fill him up like his water bowl

My little fish

I feed him other fish

Because I love him the most

Backseat Game Designer: Crime in Skyrim

In my post yesterday on “5 Things I Don’t Like About Skyrim” I listed The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim‘s crime system as the main area where I think improvements need to be made in The Elder Scrolls formula. In this post I aim to explain how the current system works, to explain what’s wrong with that system, and to suggest some possible alternatives that I think would be much better than what we have at the moment. Immortals Review

Immortals: your go-to movie for bad fashion advice

Immortals is probably one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen.

Based loosely around Greek mythology, Immortals tells the story of a young man named Theseus who must lead the Hellenes to victory against the evil King Hyperion. There are are a few Greek gods involved as well (I’m actually not sure who half of them were – the movie never tells you) but they mostly restrain themselves from interfering in mortal affairs until the titans (evil gods) are released.

When a Hollywood movie is based on Greek mythology you know that it’s probably going to be pretty bad. Immortals, however, is somewhat surprising in this regard – it’s even worse than you probably expected. Continue reading

5 Things I Don’t Like About Skyrim

So, I’ve had Skyrim for over a week now and I’m roughly 50 hours into it. I’ve finished the main quest and a couple of the biggest side quests as well. Don’t get me wrong, Skyrim is an absolutely amazing game. What I want to do in this post, however, is to make 5 criticisms of things that I think the game did badly; the things that it could improve upon.

Combine this post with my First Impressions one and you’ve got yourself a fairly solid review of the game (at least, I hope so!). Anyway, on with the nitpicking! Continue reading
